Chapter 3 of Summer
Vacation
Get Away 2021 was my four days,
three nights at
Shawnee State Park.
This was my second outing with my new
Quest Blackwater 4-Person vinyl dome tent.
A few weeks earlier I did a weekend at
John Bryan State Park,
which is pretty much in my back yard, to do a trail run
before I camped with the tent at Shawnee. That trail run
helped because when I got to Shawnee I pitched that sucker
like I'd owned it for years.
The campsite lot was a hidden up a flight of steps from the
campgrounds road. I actually drove passed it a couple times
before I finally reasned out where it was. It wasn't
exactly what you can call remote, but it was a little bit
isolated, and well shaded, which I liked. The shading
certainly helped the heat build up in the tent from being
worse than it got, which was at points, a bit hot.
My ten-inch portable fan was a good idea, because it did
get bit hot during the days, especially inside that vinyl
tent, which acted pretty much like a hot house. And, despite
the help of the shade, it was still pretty toasty inside the
tent, even in the evenings, and having that fan breeze on
me made getting to sleep much easier. Shawnee also has a
nice, air conditioned shower house and a nice little laundry
room ‐‐ so you can see I really roughed it like a
nineteenth-century American pioneer. By the way, here's a
tip for those of you who didn't already know this: if you
find you don't have laundry detergent, a little hair shampoo
will do the trick.
The Giannini
acoustic bass was pulled out here, as it was at the
Acorn Trail Cabin,
and I worked on at least one of the two new songs that were
started during this
vacation.
I may have even started one of them here, rather than at
the cabin. It being over a year and half ago, I can't
remember, exactly.
Of course, I got some good hiking in. Shawnee State Park has
some pretty good trails. And you know I got in some good
fire pit time after dark, as well as some nice,
camp-fire-cooked dinners.
