My Hocking Hills stay was at the Acorn Trail Cabin, aka: the Cozy Amish Log Cabin. I was there for four nights and five days. Acorn was a nice little cabin, even had high-speed WiFi. The WiFi came in handy because I was able to watch the The Human Race Theatre Company's on-line production of The Revolutionist, and Jennifer Joplin's original one-person show, The Prime of Miss Jen Joplin, the latter presented through the 2021 Cincy Fringe Festival. They were both streaming because that summer was, you know, still heavy COVID-19 seclusion time, heavier than now (February, 2023), at least. And, of course, I sat at the fire pit most evenings. One night I couldn't due to heavy rain; I don't think it was the first night, even though my drive from The Wilds that day had been mostly in a heavy downpour, especially the first part, closer to The Wilds, but there was one of the nights it rained, having started in late afternoon. This was the first time during the Summer Vacation Get Away 2021 that I did any music. As I wrote earlier, I'd brought my Giannini acoustic bass, my Oxygen 61 Keyboard, and my eight-track recorder, plus assorted appropriate accoutrement on the trip. But the Hocking Hills stay was the only place I did anything musical, and I ended up not using the keyboard or recording anything on the eight-track. I did, however, start a couple new songs, neither that have been worked on since the vacation. One has the working title of "Fire Rain Song," and was inspired by a fire pit at the cabin that was surviving well a misty rain fall. The other, which my memory says was also started at the cabin, but may have started on the next leg at Shawnee State Park, has the working title of "Zen and the Art of Go." The other big music-related activity I did at Acorn was a significant amount of the editing in Final Cut Pro X for the "Just One Shadow" music video. In fact, I got it close to about 99% to locked edit. My excursions during this leg were returns to Old Man's Cave and Rock House, and a first visit to the John Glenn Astronomy Park, which I had noted the existence of on previous stays in Hocking Hills but had not yet visited. I got some good hiking/walking in, and in lovely environments; my blood pressure during the stay had a mean average of 110 over 74 ‐‐ not bad. The John Glenn Astronomy Park was interesting, but when I was there it was closed and there was no program going on. So all I could do was walk the circular, outside conservatory and grab a few photos. I'll have to make a point of visiting there some evening when an astronomy program is going on. It would not be a complete stay in Hocking Hills were I not to take a trip into Logan for a veggie pizza at Pizza Crossing. My ten-inch veggie with extra sause was as good as every other time. Seriously, when in Hocking Hills, you must visit Pizza Crossing. This trip I also dropped into a local eatery, Bush's Restaurant for a more mid-western, home-cooked sort of meal. It's been a while, but I believe I had fried chicken and mashed potatoes. I also stopped into Hocking Hills Frozen Yogurt Company for some frozen yogurt; on a scale of 1 to 10 I'd rate their yogurt 6.5, maybe 7, though I do admit I went back on a subsequent visit to Hocking Hills. |
